Zeromus 2, Us 0
Posted by Mike Blitz on May 26th, 2008
Oh, snap. The same damn thing happened. Slower speed didn’t help us at all, as Zeromus still bashed our party about like ragdolls. I don’t think I put more than 20,000 hits on him before we were all dead. Again.
There goes another hour of my life.
I can see a few places where I really messed up, mainly because I am so rusty from not playing. At a pivotal moment, instead of casting Rosa’s strongest healing spell, I cast her second strongest one. I think I could also have used a much better range of spells in the fight. In short, I don’t know if I’m strong enough to win this fight, but I do know that I can do much better, and I have a few ideas of things to try.
Time to grind back up to try yet again. I’ll get this guy yet.

Tips:
1. Try to rearrange your spells so Curaja is at the top and have Rosa cast it every round.
2. If Kain is out of the way he won’t get hit…
3. Pay attention to Zeromus’ COUNTER-attack pattern, and if you find that some action of yours elicits a particularly strong response, refrain from doing that action if possible.
4. You’d think that things (or beings) that were a pain to obtain would come in handy here.
5. You noticed YOU start the battle? Take advantage and don’t rush to hit
If points 2,3,4,5 weren’t clear: SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

SPOILERS
2. KAIN JUMP!!
3. Black magic from Rydia and Edge –> Zeromus counters with Flare. Stick to summons.
4. i.e. the Knife (which you lack but you have other things to throw) and BAHAMUT! Rydia summons Bahamut every single round!
5. Before using the crystal on Zeromus, take your time to buff your party with Protect, Shell and Haste.

Mike is using the crystal on Zeromus right? I don’t remember him mentioning anything about it in his other posts.

IIRC until you don’t use it the battle doesn’t even start. Plus Golbez practically BEGS you to do it.

Useful tip : This boss is almost entirely counter-based. So if you’re ever in a bind stop attacking and he should slow down a bit!

This is a completely random aside, but now that you’re almost finished FFIV, how do you feel about the timing with regards to the game coming out soon with updated graphics etc for the DS (7/22/08 per Gamestop)? I’m such a sucker for these things, I’ll probably be getting the DS version even though I have the GBA version.
Oh, and belated welcome back. Work’s been keeping me from reading here as much as I used to, but it’s nice to see regular posting again.

Jaime, Edge,
Thanks for the tips. I’m going to hold off reading them for a bit, until I feel like I’m getting desperate, but thanks!
Terp,
At some point I’d like to try the DS version, but I first want to survive the GBA version. I feel like I’ve been playing this game forever. They’re releasing games faster than I can play them. And thanks for the welcome back! Welcome back to you, too!
Big D,
Cool! Thanks! Got to pump it up!
