We Get Rocks in Our Chests

Posted by Mike Blitz on November 12th, 2008

Exhilarated after our victory over Atmos, we quickly make our way to a sparkling underwater cross on our world map: something called Ghido’s Underwater Cave. I have no idea why I need to go here, we’ll just accept our fate, zen-like. Once at the cave, we dock our submarine and make our way inside. The interior is a rocky maze of narrow, winding paths. The enemies here are tough: nasty slime-like creatures that regenerate by sucking our hit points away. We can defeat them easily enough, but it takes a mana-eating Titan spell from Galuf to do it. We also run into some mages that shape change into random creatures. The mages are unexpectedly difficult to knock out.

Considering the difficulty of these fights, and considering that we have free heals available in the nearby submarine, I decide to take a small grinding break and work on a few things. First, Lenna has reached Master level at White Mage, so I switch her to a Geomancer, just for kicks. Also, Fairis has mastered the Ninja job trait, so I switch him to a Blue Mage. The enemy mages give solid job experience points, so we can move up some job levels quickly here. Also, I’d love to bump everyone up to level 33 while we’re here.

We spend the next twenty minutes or so grinding back and forth through the first couple of levels of the underwater cave. On a whim, though, we decide to push on farther. Almost immediately we come to a large room with five chests in the middle. A huge rock lies in the center chest, and when we put it in one of the other chests, we trigger open a door in the wall of the room. Intrigued, we mess around with the rock in the chests, and gradually work our way through a series of passageways and triggering mechanisms. After a bit it looks as if we’ve opened the way up to the next level of the cave. We’ll continue there tomorrow.

The reason you want to be there is because Ghido is the sage you were looking for earlier. You’re accessing the island which sank, only below sea level!

Congrats on mastering the Ninja, now you can equip two weapons at the same time with any other class, if you equip the 2sword-ability, that is. I remember having two special daggers, which both hit twice, so every turn I got four hits. Convinient, eh?

I did not like the Geomancer for the simple reason that its Gaia-ability has the same element of the battles surroundings. How many times you have encountered a bomb in a ice cave?

    Jaime,
Aha! Thanks! But the island that sank was in a completely different place, wasn’t it? Must have sunk and then drifted, I guess.

    Windark,
I’ve enjoyed Geomancer so far. It adds some nice punch to the healer. Ultimately, I think I might just make Lenna a knight, or some other pure melee class fighter so that she can hit with more power. I think she’s also a Level 3 Time Mage, which might work as well. In any case, it’s fun to mess around with the different jobs.

I’m guessing the Anon is Mike, lol.

And yeah, it must be fun to play around with the jobs, it is in other games with job systems
