Final Fantasy: Lost in Japanese

The Emperor Dies, For a Third Time!

Posted by Mike Blitz on January 5th, 2007

As with Final Fantasy I, we stepped up to the final boss and she started to babble and babble in Japanese. Yikes, could she talk. At least I assume it was a she, as she had long hair, had these flowing robes on, and well, she liked to talk a lot.

EmperorI tried to follow everything she said, but I think I ended up getting about half of it. To be honest, I was only half paying attention to this verbal foreplay, as we all knew what was going to happen after she finished talking.

She did say something about her being the good half of the Emperor, that when the real emperor died the first time, her spirit broke into two halves: one half was the bad one that went to hell and created Pandemonium; the other half was the good one, now standing in front of us. She then offered us eternal life, to live in the current place, but we turned that down perfunctorily. She said other stuff, too, and our nearest friends and relatives popped in to say hello, so by the time we got around to fighting I was getting pretty tired of all the yapping.

But finally we did get around to butting heads. To be honest, I was expecting a bit more from her. The fight took about ten minutes, but we were never in trouble. She killed Minwu once, but compared to our Ultima Weapon fight, this was cake. We methodically wore her down and finally she blew up into zillions of digital pieces.

We were then given our second ending, which was much like the first, except now it was really over! The world would start to rebuild, and all is wonderful!

Done! We did it! Two down, and many more to go.

Status: Finished with Final Fantasy II!

Heh, I read it in my native tounge, and I still have no idea what exactly hapened. Was he/she lying? Was it really the same guy? Whod want to live in a monster infested hole forever anyway?

The final battle only stands out ecause of the sheer number of hp, I was really surprised after the rest of SoR was so freaking hard.

Congratulations! What platform will you be playing ff3 on? There are lots of options of you read japanese.

Ah, it’s good to hear that someone was confused reading it in English as well!

I was surprised, too, that the final battle was so easy, especially since the first few hours were so difficult. I think you could make the game easy by training up some of the SoR characters during the regular game, but I never did that.

I’ll mention this in an upcoming post, but I’ve got a bit of a problem with FF3. I intend to play the DS version, but there may be a bit of a delay.

But if the rest of the game was easy, The boss would be cake. (wow timing, at least if the date stamps are right for me)

I think there are some definite balance issues with SoR, but overall they did a pretty good job with it. Given how they set the SoR beginning, a lot of gamers are going to begin the game with wildly different party strengths, depending on what they did in the core game.

Overall, I didn’t mind the difficulty in SoR. Some of the immediate wipeout battles were a bit frustrating, but there was enough of a range for me to survive and make it through the game. I like the games to be relatively hard. Final Fantasy I on the GBA, for example, was just too easy.

Yeah, it sayss something that you can just ignore the game and still win battles, but once you pull out the strategy (like boosting your speed). You can kill bosses in les than 5 rounds, even without the bonus content, which just powers your guys into infinity it seems. Ultima weapon is like a god turned into sword form or something.

  6. Sami Says:

Sorry to break your bubble, but just because Emperor Palamecia has long hair and wears robes when he is an angel, he is still a man. ;D

Hey godzilla blitz, you can call me Chocobo Knight. By the way, I never did SoR, but my bro did, and I watched…I couldn’t understand the speech either!

As for the Emperor, in the English version, he is referred to as a male, but when I first saw his picture, I thought he was female too!

I have never played ff3, but good luck to you!

  8. random passerby Says:

Yeah its acualy fun as long as you accept it as pure grind. I played it during my hour bus rides during the week, and it was a grea wasy to pass the time.

  9. Sami Says:

Ack, what horrible sentence structure I have on my previous comment! XP Well, you got the main idea… hopefully.

Anyway, I forgot to congratulate you on making it through FF2, I know Soul of Rebirth was hell at least for me, who doesn’t like grinding. ;P

Sorry for the delay in responding…!

random passerby: Yeah, I didn’t know what was the main content and what was the bonus content in FF1, so I was just rolling over everything at the end of the game with so little trouble. The last boss went down in just a few short rounds. Much too easy, that game.

Sami, Chocobo Night: Thanks for the correction on the gender of the Emperor. I was pretty confused there!

Sami: Thanks, yeah, Soul of Rebirth wasn’t my favorite part of FF2. I’m not much on grinding either.
