Revenge on the Giant’s Brain
Posted by Mike Blitz on May 15th, 2008
Once again we initiate the fight against Final Fantasy IV’s Giant’s Brain. This time, however, we have a plan, and it works perfectly, almost.
We quickly demolish the defensive orb, then turn our attention to the large, main orb. We beat on this for a while, and are happy to see that no black balls of death float over our way! The plan is working!
And then it happens. One slip of the control pad and I have Cecil swing Excalibur at the small offensive orb instead of the larger orb. Ooops. He takes the thing out in one shot, and suddenly we are faced with black balls eating our party again, and a new set of supporting orbs for the main central orb. Argh!
But our team reacts quickly and well. Within seconds we take out the defensive orb, and within a minute or so our party is back up to five full-strength members. Once reestablished, we resume pounding on the central orb. A short while later it explodes, and then we quickly dispatch the last orb.
We’ve won!
Or not…
Golbez walks in and confronts us. Damn. We are so dead.

Final Fantasy IV likes to send in Golbez to give you a beating everytime you get close to actually completing an objective, doesn’t it?

I don’t think I’ve ever played a game like this. Every time you think you accomplish something, someone shows up and takes it away.

That’s Final Fantasy for you, Mike. You’ll get used to that “plot twist” when you play the series further. The rule is that if you get your hands into a shiny object of immense power, you don’t have to wait long for someone to take it away from you.

Maybe this is a spoiler but it’s even worse in Final Fantasy VI, which has a group of heroes which are seriously a bunch of jinxes. That’s what you get when you try to do storytelling with an event-driven engine.

I’m sure this sort of thing has happened in the previous games, but I haven’t noticed it to the degree that I have in this game.
I’m looking forward to VI, then! Bring it on!
