Poll: Which Final Fantasy is the Hardest?
Posted by Mike Blitz on July 6th, 2008
Time for a poll!
Of the four games completed so far in this journey, which did you have the most difficulty with? For me, I’d have to go with Final Fantasy IV (GBA). I had a bear of a time taking out the last boss, and got stuck for an hour or so with another boss in the final dungeon as well. I found it harder than any of the previous three games that I played.

Do I have to base my vote on these most recent iterations? I’ve found some of them to be easier than their originals and that may influence my vote.

For me it was Final Fantasy II. Didn’t like the leveling system much, that what made it too hard for me. Or annoying perhaps, not hard. Even IV was easier, and I have started a new game many times because of the poor levelling of my side.

Hero Of Lore,
I was thinking of the versions that I’ve played on this blog. I’ve listed them beside the name of the game. I’ve heard that some of the original versions were pretty hard.
Heavenfang,
Interesting that you mention FF2. I didn’t think it would get many votes, but other people are picking that one as well.

I thought Final Fantasy II was the easiest of the first four games! Final Fantasy III is much harder, though the Nintendo version was pretty easy.

Yeah, at first I thought IV was hardest, but after a bit of thinking my choice was II. In IV you’ll get through simply by leveling up characters, but in II you’ll have to think what do you want your opponents to do to you, or you’ll just hit your own characters. Or maybe I’m just too picky and want every Final Fantasy game to have similar game mechanics, since I didn’t like XII either.

To me, the hardest of the four is FF III, by far. I just got it a few weeks ago, and I managed to get all the way to the final dungeon until the difficulty overcame me. It’s only the fact that there are no save points in an endlessly long dungeon with six tough boss fights in a row. One mistake, and you lose literally hours of progress.
The Japanese might dig the hardcore difficulty, but I surely don’t. I guess I just have to level up more, but doing only that is such a bore.

I realize now that I got so lucky in that last dungeon in Final Fantasy III. It would have been a major downer to have wiped at the end.
