As in FFIII, he is a Summon, which you can get optionally quite a bit later on in the game. Leviathan appears in most of the series, and is usually a summon, but he doesn't appear in FFVI, FFX, and technically he doesn't appear in FFXII, but there is an Airship called Leviathan in that one instead You can’t go into Leviathan this time. I remember him from Final Fantasy II, where he did pretty much the same thing he does in Final Fantasy IV. In FF2, though, he swallowed everyone.
