Ghido, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

Posted by Mike Blitz on November 13th, 2008

We continue our Final Fantasy Five explorations in Ghido’s Underwater Cave. Now that we’re past the chests, our way becomes clear, and we soon find ourselves in front of a small turtle. Bartz starts tapping the thing, and then is surprised to hear it speak to him! This, my friends, is Ghido, the talking turtle!

Ghido tells us a winding tale about the Moore Forest, which lies to the west or the Surgate Castle. Apparently Exdeath is on his way to the heart of the forest, and Ghido thinks it’s imperative that we stop him. The forest is protecting something that Exdeath wants, and we must go and help. Ghido gives us a special tree branch to help us somehow, and bids us on our way.

Nothing in Final Fantasy is so easy. I just know we’re going to get jumped on our way out of here. Gilgamesh, or someone, is bound to jump our tails. But this time I’m amazed. There is no boss that tries to destroy us. We simply stroll out of the cave and board the sub. Wow!

You know, in horror movies, you sometimes expect a monster attacks the hero from around the corner, but then the thing crashes trough the ceiling. Maybe the same is with Final Fantasies? Breakinh the routine, so to speak.

You haven’t mentioned it, so you must have missed the line where it is revealed that EXDEATH IS A TREE!!!! (Oh, and our earlier warnings about plant monsters in Final Fantasy games definitely still applies.)

  3. Edgemaster Says:

Yeah, I always forget that detail when I play this game…quite weird for a bad guy…

Exdeath is a tree?!?!? Like the green, leafy tree in my back yard? No way. You guys are pulling my leg.
But Ghido was talking about trees a lot, that’s for sure. And the Japanese name for the branch he gave us could be translated as “The Branch of the Elder Tree.” So we’re definitely expecting something sentient in the forest.

Lol, I assume not the regular, run-of-the-mill tree, but yeah, he is!

Ghido explains some of Exdeath’s backstory in the dialogue. Apparently, Exdeath was originally an ordinary, everyday tree in Moore Forest, then one day an evil power transformed him into a monster. Personally, in my opinion, this ranks as the single most hilarious villian character concept of all time.

Good grief, Charlie Brown. No wonder I didn’t understand it.

    Thanks for the explanation Vazdul

And yeah, I really don’t blame you for not getting that Mike, hell, I don’t get it in English, so I can’t imagine what it’d be like in Japanese!

Sorry, the above comment was mine, I’m on a different computer
