Final Fantasy V: The Weakening Wind

Posted by Mike Blitz on July 4th, 2008

wind.jpgThe game begins with a series of cutscenes that we sit back and watch. One day, for no apparent reason, all across the world the wind dies. In one of these short scenes, an obviously well-to-do father decides he must go to the Shrine of the Wind to check on matters, and he tells his daughter, whose name is Lenna, that he is leaving. Once at the Wind Shrine, he locates the wind crystal, which appears to shatter. There also appears to be something going on with meteorites hitting the earth as well.

With that as a backdrop, the game starts. We start out in some woods as Bartz, an adventurer wandering the world with his trusty Chocobo. We move him around a bit and stumble onto a massive meteorite in a clearing. Near the meteorite are two bodies, both of which turn out to be still alive. The first is Lenna. I’m not quite sure how she got here, maybe she was going to look for her father? But in any case, her toughness can’t be questioned: she is perfectly okay despite nearly getting decapitated by a meteorite. We also find Galuf, and older man who apparently has completely forgotten what he was trying to do before the meteorite fell.

When Lenna mentions she is going to the Wind Shrine to check on her father, Galuf seems to remember something important about the Wind Shrine. The two of them decide to go off together to the Wind Shrine.

This leaves Bartz all alone again. But not for long! After a bit of random wandering, Bartz stumbles upon Galuf and Lenna getting attacked by goblins. He jumps in and rescues them, at which point he decides to join with them to go to the Wind Shrine.

We now have a purpose: To the Wind Shrine!

Can I add some plot clarity? Lenna’s father is The King Of Tycoon, and since the Wind Crystal is in the Tycoon region, it’s his responsibility to make sure nothing is happening to it.

Also, in the English version, Lenna’s name was translated as Reina. (At least in the Playstation port. I don’t know if it was changed in the GBA English version)

    Hope I didn’t spoil anything.

After so long away, I crawl out of the woodwork as you begin my personal favorite Final Fantasy. You’re in for quite a treat, Mike! As long as you progress a wee bit faster than you did in IV, you should be fine. :) Also, Big D, Advance changed her name back to Lenna, just fyi.

    Big D,
Thanks! That helps. I kind of figured he was important because of the family’s apparent wealth, but I missed that detail.

Yeah, I’ve been looking up the English names on Wikipedia. There are so many ways you could take the Japanese that it’s futile to guess how they did it in English. I still can manage to get them messed up, though.

Really looking forward to this game.

I always think it’s funny when you come up with weird spellings and names for the characters. Oh well!

You do quite well with the names most of the time
