Final Fantasy IV: Off We Go!
Posted by Mike Blitz on July 14th, 2007
Eek! When I fire up Final Fantasy IV, I feel like I’ve gone back in time, which for the most part is just what I’ve done. The visual difference between Final Fantasy III on the DS and Final Fantasy IV GBA version kind of hits you hard.
The other thing that struck me is that this game has got story! After only a little play, I feel like the characters have some meat to them, and I have a good sense of what’s going on.
In my first session with the game, I basically just followed the introduction, which introduces Cecil and his story. They toss a lot of Japanese at you, so there might be some things I’m missing here. From what I gather, Cecil is the leader of the Red Wing, which is the King of Baron’s elite force. He gets sent to a land called Mysidia to get an uber crystal for the King.
The Mysidia folk offer no resistance, and the whole mission doesn’t sit well with Cecil. Cecil easily obtains the crystal and returns to Baron. When he voices concerns to the King upon his return, the King flips out and removes Cecil of his command. However, the king gives Cecil a way to redeem himself. He orders him to deliver a special ring to the town of Mist.
Cecil’s friend Kain will join Cecil on the mission. The two of them will head out the following morning.
On an interesting side note, Cecil apparently has a way with the women. In the middle of the night, he gets a visit from Rosa, who appears to be his girlfriend.
Status: Getting a Clue, Level 10 (Cecil and Kain’s starting levels)

Hey Mike, just want to tell you, wonderful translating! So far, you’ve gotten every important piece of the opening, I think you’ll do fine.

SuperMegaman: Ah, good to know that I’m off to a good start. Thanks! There was a ton of reading in there, but a lot of the vocabulary in the series is starting to recycle. The terms across games are pretty much the same, so I think it’s getting easier for me. Well see, though. If the story gets complex I may have troubles.

Well hope you enjoy. The funny thing is, they are actually making an FF4 on the DS, so really the graphics change wouldn’t be so different in that case. Then again, its only just started development, so you wouldn’t really want to wait, would you? Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Chocobo Knight: Wow. I didn’t realize they were remaking Final Fantasy 4 for the DS. I’m going to keep going, though. I just hope I finish playing FF4 before they finishing making it for the DS. That would be embarrassing if I played the game that slowly.

The DS version is supposed to have a 75% new story, with only a quarter of the original story kept. Maybe you can play that after Final Fantasy XII, as a way to look back on the series and remember the begining of the project.

Drake: That sounds neat about the new story in the DS remake of Final Fantasy 4. Going back to play it might be fun, assuming I ever get to the end of this. By the time I finish, I’ve got to believe that at least Final Fantasy XIII will be out.

Maybe. I think it comes out here in America in 2009, but it’ll probaly be out in Japan in 2008, which is where you get all your games if i’m correct.

Honestly, Drake, I haven’t heard from any reliable source about such a big story change (which is totally incredulous) for the FF 4 DS, and I visit multiple FF- and gaming-related sites daily. You shouldn’t take random rumors as truths immediately, you know?

You’re right, Sami, I was mistaken. The truth is that 75% was cut out of the ORIGINAL script, the one that’s been used for the SNES, PS, and GBA versions, but for the DS version, the director plans to include everything that was originally writtn, as well as some new things, with only the a few parts being cut. Sorry about that everyone.

That is, it was cut out while they were making the original because of time restraints and other problems.

That would make more sense, that they would be able to add more to the story, rather than change it. I’m sure they’ve got a ton more memory to work with now.

Yeah, that was a mistake on my part.
