Doors, Doors, & More Doors
Posted by Mike Blitz on January 24th, 2008
Good grief, Charlie Brown. So much for thinking the way is clear. There are more doors in Final Fantasy IV’s Sealed Cave than in Home Depot. This wouldn’t be so bad if they were relatively easy to take out, but they’re not. These doors hit hard, and in every battle we lose at least one member of our party.
Rydia’s Bios spell works wonders against the doors, however, and this keeps the battles under control for the most part. We pick up boatloads of experience against the things as well, and are rocketing up in levels. Our gil supply is growing as well, so we should be able to afford some of the upgrades for sale back in Tomra.
Many of the doors lead to dead-end chambers that are completely empty, but several of them lead to weapon and armor upgrades that help our party significantly. Between the accelerated leveling and the new gear, I can feel our party gaining in strength.
After a couple of levels in the cave, we come upon a safe zone. We pitch our tent and save our game. We’ve amassed quite a bit of cash now, so tomorrow I want to return to Tomra for some more upgrades, then we’ll come back to push on in the Sealed Cave.

Heh, you’ll never complete the game if you keep turning back from the dungeons. My advice is just to push to the end of each dungeon, and *then* upgrade.
It’s different if there’s a boss you can’t handle without an equipment upgrade, but there rarely is. Levels are more important than getting that +2 attack power or defense.

Maybe in games like D&D, but it seems like a good idea if he’s having troubles with these doors. Anyone else think it’s kinda weird that the doors are weak against poison?

Sami,
Yeah, I think you’re probably right about not going back to upgrade. There were so few random encounters in this cave, though, that I thought I could get out and back in quickly. Didn’t take long to make the roundtrip.
Drake,
The doors got quite a bit easier as we gained experience. Also, I’m not sure that the doors were weak against poison so much as that the poison spell worked fairly well. There may have been a different spell that would have been much more effective.
I thought I remember hitting the first door for more than 7,000 points in the first successful battle, but I couldn’t remember what spell I used, and couldn’t get it to happen again. I figured I was just hallucinating when it happened, so I didn’t mention it here.
