Cecil Beats Himself Up
Posted by Mike Blitz on August 4th, 2007
Inside the stone structure, Cecil receives a holy sword and is converted to a Paladin. However, things aren’t that easy. He must first defeat his Dark Knight form in an one-on-one battle. The two Cecil’s start whacking away at each other. I didn’t think this fight would be so tricky—right before he converted, Cecil in Dark Knight form had only 400 hit points—so I took it kind of easy. But as an opponent, the Dark Knight Cecil has boatloads more hitpoints that the 400 that he had in our party. I wasn’t expecting this, and suddenly the Paladin Cecil was very low on hit points. Stupidly I used a potion instead of a high-potion. Before I could recover, um, the Paladin Cecil was dead. What a dummy.
Because of this, I had to fight my way through Scarmiglione again, but fortunately that wasn’t tricky. Within a few minutes, Cecil was back, standing against himself once more.
This time, the fight went much better. I just kept Cecil popping High-Potions to replenish his hit points, and kept wailing away at the Dark Knight Cecil as best I could. The fight took forever, but finally the Dark Knight Cecil fell.
With that, the transformation to Paladin is complete. As a bonus, Tellah figured out the whole Meteo thing. Basically he remembered all the magic he supposedly forget. One of these spells is called Meteo (Meteor).
And on that note, we’ll fight our way down the mountain tomorrow and head back for Mysidia.

Man,that fight should have not been that hard. You had to pay attention and the “light” was telling you not to fight. You only had to stand still and heal yourself. BTW Cecil has a cure spell now

They have to have hp discrepancy in these types of fights, because under player controll, the character will usually be healed efficiently (unless you mess up) and its hard to set up an ai that does that. You can set it to heal at 30%, for example, but if the player is hitting too hard, it will be messed up.
FF heroes/heroines also have a habit of hitting a lot harder than their hp.

I was defeated 2 times by “Dark Knight Cecil” before I finally won, so you’re not the only one who didn’t listen to the light.^^ And about Cecil’s low HP, look at his level and you should understand what happened…

Yeah, if you don’t fight at all, then the Dark Knight just fades away

Oops, that was supposed to be me there, its just I got a new computer, and hadn’t typed in my name yet

I had forgotten about the light in this fight. I wonder if playing in Japanese made it harder for you to get the jist of what to do?

Anivotas,
Humm…what light? That explains why the fight was so hard, though. It seemed so strange that it went on and on. Thanks.
Random Passerby,
That makes a lot of sense. I should have expected it, but just got careless.
Opale,
I did see that Cecil is all the way back at level 1. Sigh. Back to the beginning.
Good to hear that I wasn’t alone.
Chocobo,
Congrats on the new computer!
Terpkristin,
The hardest part for me is when the game only gives you a limited time to see the language. Most of the time it’s not a problem, but in Final Fantasy IV, there is occasionally text that flashes across the top of the screen during fights. It disappears really fast, and I barely have time to see it, forget about read it. I’m guessing that is where the “light” was telling me what to do.
I’m going to go in and try to adjust the settings for this text speed. I thought I had it at the slowest setting, but maybe I set it backwards by mistake.

Mike, yes, the text at the top of the screen during that battle tells you not to fight, Cecil is supposed to atone for his sins in that fight…but even in the US versions, it goes by pretty quickly, so it’s very understandable that you missed it. Anywho, MUCH congratulations at beating it the hard way…It’s considered one of those challenges that’s not really supposed to be possible. Another example is when you first see Kain again, at Fabul. Crazy as it sounds, you can actually win that fight. o_O

Well you might have changed the text speed the wrong way either because of mistranslation, or like you thought 5 was the slowest and really 5 was the fastest, or something like that

well, suposedly the “light” or thingie that gave you your sword starts talking during the fight and telling you that not all is solved by violence and things like that

Anivotas, Chocobo,
Thanks. I’m going to look at my speed setting for that dialog. I just watched a YouTube video of Tellah’s fight with Edward, and the text at the top that flashed during the fight disappears much more slowly than the text on my game.
SuperMegaman,
Thanks! The fight took forever, though. I was worried my battery was going to wear out first.
