Cave of the Dark Elf, Part I

Argh. This could be tricky. Without the use of metal weapons and armor, we are at a distinct disadvantage. On the first level of the Cave of the Dark Elf, porcupine thingies attack us and rip us to shreds. They seem to have a defensive reaction that attacks us every time we hit them, which means they are firing off attacks like crazy. We can win the fight readily enough, but it takes gobs of potions for us to get back to full strength after each fight. In our first two fights alone, we burn through more than 20 potions to replenish our strength.
Another tricky element here is the relative cost of magic spells. Tellah only has 90 magic points at his current level, and it takes10 or more magic points for him to cast a spell that does significant damage. This means that I really have to conserve his magic potential, at least until I can find a save point in here.
After a bit, we find the exit down to the second level, but by this time our potion supply is badly depleted, and I’ve used all of Cecil’s arrows. We exit the cave and head back to town to replenish our supplies.
The nice thing about all this, however, is that by the time we’re done with this, we should have picked up some substantial level increases.

If you a want a tip that will make life MUCH easier in this cave, read this :
Take the Enterprise and fly to Rydia’s village. If you look around (it’s hidden behind a chimney, I think) you should find the Change Rod (or something like it) Equip it on Tellah (of any magic user) and use it like an Item on these porcupines to turn them into pigs! They will never do their counter that way!

Wow, if only I’d known that then…

The Change Rod is hidden in a secret corridor inside a fireplace, not in a chimney. Also, the same village of Mist should sell Wooden Hammers for Cid.

I had a hard time in there too…good luck, Mike!

Edjemaster & Sami,
Thanks for the warning on the tip. I decided not to read it, but I’ve made a note to come back to it later.
Chocobo,
I think a few more levels will help, and I picked up a level or two in the first run through. Like Terpkristin mentioned in one of her other comments, getting lost is a big help in a game like this because you gain so many levels when you do. I don’t think I’ve been lost enough yet in Final Fantasy IV. The second run was better than the first, and I’m hoping the next run is even better.
