A Bit Lost

Posted by Mike Blitz on 30th December 2006

lostWe walked around the town and talked to a bunch of people. Apparently, we are in some kind of stasis, neither dead nor alive, and our mission is to solve the mystery. I got confused, though, by some of the Japanese in the town, so that’s about as specific I can get at the moment. I have a feeling that I missed a hint from someone telling us what to do next. This, of course, means that I have no idea where I’m supposed to go.

We wandered into a transporter that zaps us into an alternate version of Pandemonium, but I don’t think we’re supposed to start fighting in there yet. Some of the monsters put the big hurt on us. We cleared one level just for fun, but it wasn’t easy. We have now headed back to town to talk with the townsfolk again, this time I’m hoping we get a better understanding of what exactly we’re supposed to do.

Out of Jade, by a Whisker!

Posted by Mike Blitz on 29th December 2006

woundedWhew! We made it out of Jade, but not by much. We had one healing potion left and no magic potions. Everyone was running low on hit points and and magic points. If there were a seventh level, I don’t think we could have made it.

One thing that helped was bumping into Richard, who has over 2200HP and packs a solid punch compared to the other three party members. With his help we were able to efficiently clear the last few battles in Jade and transport out.

We are now standing on a wooden dock, in a small town somewhere. We’ll explore this town this evening.

Anyone Got a Drink?

Posted by Mike Blitz on 28th December 2006

empty_drinkI must have been in a negative mood the other day. I fired up Soul of Rebirth again with a more determined attitude, and the results were much better. By saving after every victorious battle, I was able to make it out of the first level. On the second level we bumped into Joseph, who also died in the main game. The three members shared their stories, formed a group, and continued on their way. Joseph only has 400HP, but we’ll take any help we can get.

The fighting continues to be difficult, but we are getting stronger quickly. On the second and third levels, we were wiping out less frequently. By the fourth level, the issue has become more one of expended potions than of dying in battle. In most of the fights we win, we take a beating that requires healing, which in turn requires magic. We are now down to our last 3 magic potions, and I have no idea how much fighting is left to go.

And that’s where we are at the moment. We’re hacking our way through the fourth level, conserving our magic as much as possible, and hoping that the end is near.

Soul of Rebirth: Off We Go!

Posted by Mike Blitz on 27th December 2006

soul_of_rebirthHumm. This is challenging. We start with Minwu and Gordon, who died in the basic game. I got a bit confused with the Japanese, but I think we are in Jade, or someplace like that. Both characters seem to be neither dead nor alive, in a kind of alternate world. We are teaming up to do something, most likely get out of this place, but I’m not confident about this. When in doubt, start killing stuff, I say, so we’re currently trying to hack our way out of our current location. Only problem is that we are terribly weak compared to some of our enemies. We’ve only got 600 and 700 hit points each. Some of these monsters are hitting for 400 or so, and there are often 4 or more of them. We’re getting hammered in here in every fourth of fifth combat, and I’m not sure that there is much I can about it at this point.

So far, this is hardly fun. The crazy thing is that some of the enemies are ridiculously weak, then the next are brutally overpowering. The balance is all over the place. We’ll see how things play out with this one. I will need supplies or reinforcements soon, as we start with almost no potions and we’re burning through them quickly.

Ding, Dong, the Emperor is Dead!

Posted by Mike Blitz on 26th December 2006

emperor_oldMade it to level 10 in Pandemomium late last night, and took on the emperor in the final battle. Surprisingly, it went well, and he dropped after about 15-20 panic-free rounds of combat. He shied away from using physical attacks on us, which helped a lot, because he, like Astaroth, hit for massive damage and regenerated about 75% of those hits. He only did that twice, which was fortunate for us.

We started out by tossing up some Blink, Haste, and Beserk spells, then shifted to pelting him with Holy and Ultima spells. We discovered that Drain did more damage, though, so we pretty much stuck with that for the entire fight.

And with that, the main section of Final Fantasy II is complete! However, we are playing the GBA Soul of Rebirth version of the game, so more fun lurks in the afterlife. Not finished with this one yet.
