All This for a Crappy Map?

Posted by Mike Blitz on July 13th, 2008

map.jpgA couple of days ago, I was scanning a Final Fantasy V walkthrough for the correct spelling of a couple of place names, and my eyes inadvertently caught sight of a reference to a world map that you can get in that section of the game where walk around on all the ship debris.

I wish I hadn’t seen the tip, as I try to not use any cheats or outside resources, but I figured that it would be a good idea to have a world map, so we all boarded our flying dragon and headed back to the river of the undead.

Not remembering exactly where in this place the map was, it ended up taking me a heck of a long time to actually find the thing, and when I finally did get back out and took a look at the map, I couldn’t have been more disappointed. This is the second lamest world map I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe I just spent 45 minutes of my life fighting for this digital drabbiness.

Oh, well, I suppose it will come in somewhat handy. I can kind of identify mountains, and water is clear enough. If I squint and hold the map at a certain angle, I can kind of see sparkly thingies that might be cities.

Which brings us to our next problem: What do I do next?

This is probably the worst map of the 2-D FF games.

  2. Mike Blitz Says:

    Big D,
Yup, no kidding. It’s more like “vomit on parchment”. I can kind of make out things, though, so I suppose it’ll be useful in the long run, but it is kind of odd that the maps in all the previous games were so much better. The “new guy” must have made this.

  3. Jaime Says:

Actually, originally there were no maps in FFIII or FFIV, IIRC. The cool map in FFIV Advance that even gave you town names and such was a new invention for the remake.

And the original maps for FF and FFII for the NES were no great shakes either.

  4. Mike Blitz Says:

You’re kidding me. There was a map in Final Fantasy IV advance?

  5. SuperMegamanX Says:

One question: when you say crappy world map, do you mean, like, the physical map you see when you bring it up, AKA, it’s not descriptive enough, too blury, etc. Or do you mean, like the way the whole world actually looks? Because I really love V’s world design, from the mountainous north, to the chain of islands in the south. :)

  6. Jaime Says:

Yep, there was a map in FFIVA. Don’t ask me how to access it, though.

  7. Sami Says:

    SuperMegamanX,

I think if you read the post more carefully, it’s quite obvious the talk is about the actual MAP of the world, not the world itself. ;P

  8. Sami Says:

Oh, and in both FF III DS and FF IV Advance you can access the world map by using the White Magic Spell “Sight”. ;D

  9. Anonymous Says:

Ah yes I forgot! Or using an item called “midget bread” or something like that.

  10. Anonymous Says:

And if that spell / item was present in the original versions, it definitely showed crappy maps, even crappier than the FFV version.

  11. Jaime Says:

It was me in the previous two comments.

As for where to go next, it’s actually obvious, so I guess you have missed or forgot some detail of the story.

Do you need any subtle hint or do you prefer the good old method of flying about and explore?

  12. Mike Blitz Says:

Yeah, I was referring to the quality of the map itself, not the world. The world seems pretty cool so far, from what I can tell anyway.

    Jaime,
I think I’m good now, but thanks! Actually, I’m totally stuck, but not here. I’ll be posting later today, and things will make more sense.

  13. Drake Says:

The map is actually easy to read if you just concentrate. Once you visit more places and are more familiar with the world you’ll have little problem using the map to get to where you want to go.

  14. Mike Blitz Says:

    Drake,
    Agreed, but it’s soooo ugly.

  15. Vazdul Says:

The world in this game is very cool. You don’t know the half of it yet…
